Krk, Croatia - cities and districts, tours, attractions

The island of Krk is situated to the east of the Istrian peninsula. The nature here is very beautiful: thick forests alternate with cliffs, vineyards and olive plantations everywhere — but tourists come here primarily for the beaches. The island's coastline is predominantly sandy and pebbly, and the sea is considered one of the cleanest in the country (just ask the local sea urchins — they won't live just anywhere).

Krk is also considered one of the main centres of Croatian culture. The famous Bašćan slab, one of the oldest written monuments containing the first mention of Croats, was discovered here. Holidays on the coast can be combined with visits to medieval fortresses, such as the ruins of the Roman city of Fulfinum and the fortified city of Vrbnik, also known for its excellent white wine.

The island of Krk has been inhabited since ancient times and has always been at the centre of events, e.g. there was a naval battle between the armies of Julius Caesar and Pompey near the island. Over the next two thousand years, Krk changed hands and is now part of Croatia.

How to get there

The island with the mysterious name Krk is located in the Bay of Kvarner, not far from Opatija, Crikvenica and Rijeka. It is the largest of the islands belonging to Croatia, and it even has its own international airport.

The island is connected to the mainland by a road bridge, an achievement in engineering and an attraction in itself, so you can easily reach Krk by car or bus.

The weather on Krk

The bathing season on the island lasts from June through September - not very long, but in a very comfortable climate (air usually warms up to +25 ... +30 ° C and water up to +19 ... +26 ° C) and an ideal ecological situation - there are no industrial enterprises.

Krk resorts

Malinska is located on the western coast of the island, in a wide bend of the bay. It is sheltered from the winds and is very pleasant to walk around. A mere 10-minute walk from the town is the Haludovo Spa, which offers a large selection of sports centres, bars and dance floors, as well as an excellent beach.

Baška is an important tourist centre on the island, and its cultural heritage is one of the most impressive and oldest in Europe. The historic city centre is a reminder of the Roman settlers, religious monuments, churches, cathedrals and museums. It also boasts Croatia's only sandy beach, 1.5 km long.

Many of today's cities grew out of settlements founded by the ancient Romans.

Food and restaurants

The best place to sample local cuisine is in the Konobas, the island's many family-run taverns. Each one has its own style and approach to the menu and the culinary secrets have been handed down from generation to generation. Seafood pasta, grilled dishes, fresh vegetables in all sorts of combinations - all especially delicious when paired with the local house-brewed wines. Restaurants are not open 24 hours a day, but nightlife is brisk on the island, especially in Malinska and Krk, where there are several nightclubs.

National Park on Krk

Krk is a paradise for history lovers: there are Old Croatian churches with simple and laconic architecture, Roman mosaics found in many villages of this island, and prehistoric monuments of Illyrian culture. The ruins of the Roman town of Fulfinum, near the village of Omisale and the church of St. Lucia in Jurandvor are of interest. The island is considered the cradle of Croatian written language, and very interesting monuments from the past have survived. The famous Basčanska tablet, the oldest known monument of the Croatian script, was found near the town of Baska. It is a stone slab with writings in the Croatian language, embedded in the floor of an ancient church.

The figure of an angel adorning the bell tower of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary can be seen from almost everywhere on the island.

The town of Vrbnik is worth a visit - it sits on a high cliff surrounded by the sea on one side and vineyards on the other. Vineyards can be called a symbol of this town - its prosperity depends on them. The fact is that Vrbnik is a producer of wine, particularly the popular white wine Vrbnička Žlahtina, the grapes for which grow only here.

You can also take a tour of Krk, the largest town on the island. The fortifications here are worth seeing: the ramparts and Frankopan Castle with its characteristic medieval round tower (12th century). The cathedral was built in the 5th century and to this day is not only an ornament of the town, but also a remarkable historical monument.
