Holidays in Brela - how to get there and where to stay, beaches and prices

Brela travel guide: how to get to and where to stay, what to see and where to sunbathe. The most interesting things to do in Brela: places to see, signature attractions and beaches.

Brela, a small Dalmatian town (population only 1500) that is part of the Makarska Riviera, is famous for its unique pebble beach Punta Rata that is several kilometres long. The main features of this beach are the very fine pebbles and the huge number of pine trees that rise up almost to the edge of the surf. Punta Rata is considered one of the best beaches on the Adriatic. The clearest sea with water transparency up to 50 meters, beautiful mountain spurs of the Dinaric Alps, and excellent climate ranked Brela among the most popular Croatian resorts in 2002.

The town itself consists of two districts: the old part of Gornja Brela behind the serpentine road on the hill and the new part of Donja Brela stretching along the coast. There are many restaurants and cafes in the central part, the best of which are Feral, Palma and Arka. The youth bars Guliver, Lungomare or Juznjacka utjeha are available in the evenings.

Brela beaches

The most famous beach in Brela is Punta Rata, which is a pebbly beach that stretches for a few kilometres. The beach is comfortable, the pebbles are so fine that no sun loungers are necessary and the pines growing right up to the shore provide natural shade. In 2004, the beach was one of the six best beaches in the world and was voted Europe's best beach. The water is so clear and transparent that you can see the bottom even at a depth of 50m. This, of course, could not pass by the diving enthusiasts, who have long been fond of Brela. Not only professional divers from various countries, but also beginners, for whom there are several schools with professional instructors, love to rest here.

Brela has three beaches in total that have been awarded the Blue Flag, a distinction given by UNESCO to the most ecologically clean beaches in the world. Every kind of beach activity imaginable is available on any one of these beaches. Skydiving, banana boat rides, catamarans, water skiing and yachting along the coast will be long remembered. And should you decide to take the risk of paragliding, you'll always enjoy the thrill of seeing Croatia from a bird's eye view.

Brela entertainment and attractions

Don't ignore the numerous excursions across the country that are possible from Brela. Even the ones that at first glance seem too long to take are worth the price of admission and the chance to create mesmerizing memories not only of the beaches of the Adriatic Sea, but also its cities, islands and lakes.

The nature surrounding Brela is very beautiful and appealing not only to the average citizen. Once upon a time, in the 1930s, a Romanian princess visited. Fascinated by the beauty of the area, she wished to build her own castle in Brela, but negotiations on this were stalled. Of course, the princess was not left without a castle, but it was built in a different location. It was the time when tourist interest in Brela was born, and at the time there was no developed infrastructure or even prope amenities. But the beauty of the coast and the purity of the sea were so attractive that travellers from various countries came here in great numbers. Nowadays, it is especially significant that the surroundings of Brela are not only beautiful but also ecologically clean: there are no industrial plants in the vicinity, and the town itself is fenced off from civilization by a mountain range.

Brela temples

The history of the city cannot be called short: 2000 years is a considerable age. The oldest touch to the city is the bas-relief of Silvan, the god of cattle breeding, found during excavations. The jewel in Brela's crown is the Church of Our Lady of Carmen built in 1715. This Baroque building was erected to commemorate the victory over the Turkish army and its second name is the Church of the Holy Virgin of Victory. Equally beautiful is the Church of St. Elias, built in the 18th century. But Brela's main cathedral is the Church of St. Stephen. It was built in a modern style relatively recently, in the 19th century. Walking from the cathedral to the cathedral through the picturesque green alleys of the town, it is easy to imagine how life used to be many decades ago. One of the pleasures of life in the seaside resort is strolling along the promenade. The promenade is very picturesque: it is paved with white stone quarried from Brač Island. The same stone is used to pave the White House in Washington. The inhabitants of the town are fully convinced that the remnants of the stone quarried for the Brela embankment were used for finishing the White House. There is hardly any hard evidence of this fact, but it is nice to be reminded of it once in a while when strolling along the waterfront in Brela.
